F4 Tape: History, Technology & Uses of Self-Fusing Silicone Tape

F4 Tape: History, Technology & Uses of Self-Fusing Silicone Tape

From aviation and electrical applications to emergency repairs, F4 Tape has a long history as a high-performance self-fusing silicone tape.

Manufactured by Bond It USA, F4 Tape creates a strong, flexible bond to itself without the need for adhesive, making it suitable for demanding applications where conventional electrical tapes may not perform.

The History of F4 Tape

The name F4 Tape has its roots in military aviation.

F4 Tape became the unofficial name given to self-bonding rubber tape used by servicemen in the U.S. Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. The name is associated with its extensive use on the legendary McDonnell F-4 Phantom II.

The F-4 Phantom II first flew on May 27, 1958 and went on to become one of the most widely produced Western fighter aircraft in history, with more than 5,000 built.

Serving with the U.S. Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps, the F-4 was used extensively for air combat, ground attack and reconnaissance.

Although the tape was primarily used as a high-temperature electrical insulation product, its versatility also made it useful for a variety of maintenance and emergency repair applications.

That heritage continues with today's F4 Tape.

What Is F4 Tape?

F4 Tape is a self-fusing silicone tape designed to bond to itself when stretched and wrapped.

Unlike conventional pressure-sensitive tapes, it does not rely on a traditional adhesive layer. Instead, overlapping layers fuse together to create a strong, flexible and protective wrap.

This makes F4 Tape particularly useful for electrical, aviation, industrial and maintenance applications where resistance to temperature, moisture and challenging environments is important.

F4 Tape Performance

F4 Tape offers high-performance characteristics for demanding applications, including:

  • Insulation up to 8,000 volts
  • Temperature resistance up to 500°F (260°C)
  • Continuous operating temperatures up to 392°F (200°C)
  • Resistance to Mil-Spec corrosion inhibitors such as ACF-50
  • Self-fusing construction with no conventional adhesive
  • No gummy or sticky adhesive residue associated with some standard electrical tapes
  • Flexible protection around irregular shapes, wires and fittings

F4 Tape is manufactured by Bond It USA.

F4 Tape for Aviation Applications

The properties of self-fusing silicone tape make it particularly suited to aviation maintenance and electrical applications.

F4 Tape can be used for:

  • Insulating and protecting aviation wiring and electrical connections
  • Waterproofing connections and fittings
  • Wrapping and protecting wire bundles
  • Replacing shrink tape or heat-shrink tubing in suitable applications
  • Wrapping handles, tools and knobs to provide additional grip
  • Temporary and emergency repairs to lines and hoses

Its ability to conform around components and fuse to itself allows users to create a secure protective wrap without a separate adhesive.

What Is Triangular Guideline Tape?

F4 Tape is also available as Triangular Guideline Tape (TGL), sometimes referred to as Type II tape.

Unlike conventional rectangular silicone tape, Triangular Guideline Tape has a triangular cross-section. The edges are approximately 50% thinner than the center of the tape.

A guideline running through the center helps the installer maintain consistent positioning and overlap as the tape is wrapped around wires and cable bundles.

As successive layers overlap, the triangular profiles interlock. This helps create a smoother and more uniform finished wrap than can typically be achieved using a conventional rectangular tape profile.

This design makes triangular silicone tape particularly useful for OEM wire wrapping and other applications where consistent insulation coverage is important.
